Memories of Study Abroad in 1949

Virginia Fulmer Haist ’51 remembers, “The people over there had never seen anything like it before. There were two buses and 60 girls, and when we would stop to get off the bus, they would stand outside and watch us.”

“What we saw in 1949 were the remnants of war. In England, they had taken out all of the stained glass windows from all the cathedrals and stored them. When we went through the Netherlands, Rotterdam was flattened….We saw three operas and had a private audience with the Pope. I went to a fashion show in Paris one day because I was a fashion illustration major.”
